REBT was developed by Albert Ellis in the 1950s — predating CBT — and is one of the original cognitive therapies. It works on the idea that it’s not events that cause distress, but our often irrational beliefs about them. A central technique is disputing those beliefs directly: examining whether they’re logical, realistic, and helpful. It tends to be direct and challenging in style.
