Hypnotherapy involves guiding a person into a deeply relaxed, focused state — often called a trance — in which the mind is more open to suggestion and new perspectives. It’s not sleep and it’s not loss of control. In this state, the therapist works with habits, fears, or patterns that haven’t responded to conscious effort alone. Evidence is strongest for IBS, smoking cessation, and pain management. It’s often used alongside other therapies.
